city of IDEas

Discover how Vienna’s thinkers shaped the modern world and visit the places where it all began.

The cover of Richard Cockett’s book Vienna City of Ideas
  • Why did so many groundbreaking ideas originate in Vienna?
  • Did you know Reaganomics had its roots in Vienna?
  • How did Vienna become a hub for marketing and science in the interwar years?
  • Why were so many intellectuals forced to flee, and what made this cultural moment end so abruptly?

This tour is inspired by the highly-praised book “Vienna: How the City of Ideas Created the Modern World” by Richard Cockett, a British historian and Economist journalist. It tells stories of the people and the unique contemporary environment that allowed interdisciplinary ideas to thrive in Vienna in the 1920’s and 30’s.

I’ll take you to the places where groundbreaking theories were developed (that influenced even Einstein!) and visit other key landmarks. We’ll also discuss the political and social environment that made this extraordinary period of reason possible, and how this golden age had a horribly abrupt end.

I’m delighted that Richard himself joined the debut tour.

This tour is not available on Sundays or during times when the University of Vienna is closed.

We conclude the tour in front of the Sigmund Freud Museum. Feel free to compliment the tour with a visit on your own! Entry fees to the museum are not included.
